Do I or don't I...?
Do I or don’t I turn this passion into a business?
You guessed it……
I asked myself this question lots!!! It continually bounced around in my head for a year or two leading up to me registering ‘Dodimead Horology Ltd’ with Companies House.
I do already own a 200 year old, fifth generation business. But like most things which are new and an unknown, ever-present are a number of feelings associated with making this seemingly huge decision. Positivity, conviction and self-belief are key, but over-confidence could lead to disappointment.
The risk, increased workload, finances, potential failure, the list goes on. Thoughts which all reared their ugly heads in the lead-up to making things formal.
However, as soon as that last step was taken, new and predominantly positive feelings emerged. After all, the whole premise of turning this passion into a business, was to ensure that collecting and experiencing as much horological related goodness as possible could continue……….whilst hopefully covering business overheads and then a little on top.
To me, having a laissez-faire approach (combined with a healthy dose of professionalism) means that there is very little pressure to try and perform artificially. After all, this business has come about organically, so it should continue to be that way.
My ramblings here are not so much related to horology specifically, but form a key role in my thought process when modelling this business. Actually, I don't have to model it! There are no rules. I don't have to buy stock for the sake of it. I don't have to employ pressure techniques or feel pressure myself, in any situation.
Passion, professionalism, transparency and integrity are really the only things that matter to me. And with a bit of luck, the rest will take care of itself.
Onwards & Upwards.
